Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that consists of high blood sugar levels (hyperglycaemia) during pregnancy. It is associated with complications for both mother and child, such as high blood pressure, high birth weight, and slow or difficult labor or birth (dystocia) that can lead to death. . Hyperglycaemia during pregnancy increases rapidly with age and is highest in women over 45 years of age. Gestational diabetes usually goes away after pregnancy, but affected women and their children are at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life. About half of women with a history of gestational diabetes develop type 2 diabetes within 5 to 10 years of giving birth.
